Exploring The Translation Of Terms And Proper Names

This translation practice report is based on the translation from French to Chinese of Un million de revolutions tranquilles,written by French journalist Benedicte Manier.This is the translator's first book translation practice and the work is completed by cooperating with another translator.The translator started her translation from March 2017,and finished it in October.The final number of words is nearly 65,000.The book was published in Shenzhen Haitian Publishing House in January 2018.The book describes the efforts of residents around the world to change their natural and living environment,introduces new measures to solve social and ecological problems facing the world today,and emphasizes the importance of water resources,agriculture,energy,etc.This book falls into industrial technology category and involves a large amount of environmental science knowledge.Some of the new concepts have not yet appeared in China.By translating the book,the translator has known some relevant professional knowledge,and her translation skills have also been greatly improved,especially in terms of term and proper name translation.This report consists of four chapters.The first chapter focuses on the translation task and the translation process.The translation task introduces the editor's requirements for translation,book content and author information.The description of translation process includes four stages:pre-translation preparation,reading the original text,translation,and post-review.The second chapter analyzes specifically the problems encountered in translation and introduces relevant theories for solving these problems.The main difficulty of this translation practice lies in the translation of terms and proper names.Therefore,this chapter briefly discusses the translation principles and methods of terms and proper names in combination with the "accuracy" requirement of scientific translation.The term translation requirements are accurate,compliant,and concise,and proper name translation is required to refer to the originating person or place and common practice.The translation methods of these two can be roughly divided into transliteration,free translation,transliteration and free translation,but the translation focus is different in view of their different translation requirements.The third chapter is case analysis,which combines methods of fait accompli,additional translation,abbreviation,etc.to discuss respectively the translation of terms and proper names.The term cases selected include affixed words,ambiguous words,fusion words,etc.The selected proper name cases are all organizational names,but the professional vocabulary contained in these institutions' names is also analyzed.The fourth chapter analyzes the unsolved issues in this translation and summarizes the gains and shortcomings in this translation practice.Through the summary of the translation practice,the translator hopes that her thinking and exploration of term and proper name translation can provide reference for similar translation practice.
