| Background:With the strengthening of wildlife protection in China, the crackdown on illegal and criminal activities such as poaching, trafficking and smuggling of wild animals has also gradually strengthened. Thus, identification of the physical evidence of wild animals and their products has become the most direct evidence for punishing crimes.Criminal cases involving artiodactyls are frequent, therefore. At present, the main identification methods are macroscopic morphological identification and DNA identification. There are few studies on the micromorphological identification of wool, and the main research mainly focus on back hair. Methods and materials:In this study, six kinds of artiodactyls, including Cervus unicolor,Tragulus javanicus,Muntiacus muntjak,Bos gaurus,Muntiacus reevesi, and Capricomis sumatraensis, were selected. The morphology of the hair of the back, abdomen, neck, throat, buttocks and tail was studied, and 15 morphological indicators were measured and calculated.Results:1.There are significant differences in hair morphology between different parts of the same artiodactyl. When using the hair morphological characteristics to identify the species, the hair samples should be specific to the site,so as to ensure the accuracy of the identification.2.Among the six parts, the discrimination effect of the indexes of the back and hip is the most prominent, and the discrimination effect of the neck, the throat and the tail is second, and the effect of the abdomen discrimination is relatively poor.3.12 indicators including ’Length of hair’,’capillary size’,’length of the thickest scale’,’number of scales in the thickest part’,’number of scales of horizontal unit length(200 μm)’,’length-width ratio in the thickest part’,’length of the clutter type’,’length of the flat type’,’length of the flat scale’,’the clutter-the total length ratio’,’the flat-the total length ratio’,and ’length-width ratio of the flat type’are good, which can be used as an identification index.4.The thickest scale, flat scale width, and medullary index are generally used as reference indicators.Studies have shown that it is feasible to identify and classify species using hair morphological features. It is imperative to establish a database of mammalian hairs to provide a basis for identification and classification. |
