The characteristics of Himawari-8 satellite with wide-band coverage and high frequency observation can play an important role in the dynamic monitoring of sandstorm. However, due to the complexity of the surface structure and the influence of clouds and aerosols, the existing methods still have significant limitations in the monitoring of dust storms with Himawari-8 satellite. In order to improve the accuracy and stability of dust storm monitoring, this paper presents a method for monitoring dust storms using the time series and radiation information with Himawiri-8 satellite. Finally, the monitoring results of the two dust detection methods were compared with the UV aerosol index products monitored by Ozone Monitoring Instrument and the dust monitoring products using FY3B VIRR.It was found that the monitoring results were basically consistent with the spatial distribution with two dust monitoring products, and it has high precision. The main work of this paper is as follows:1)The scattering characteristics of dust aerosol particles are discussed based on the microscopic properties of dust aerosols. And based on the band design of Advanced Himawari Imager(AHI)of Himawari-8 satellite, this paper analyzed the spectral characteristics of typical objects, clouds, and multi-type dust, realized cloud detection of AHI data, proposed a dust detection method in medium and thermal infrared brightness temperature difference, and constructed dust intensity index for dynamically monitoring dust intensity.2)By analyzing the daily changes of the apparent reflectance(brightness temperature)of clear sky over several types of underlying surfaces in China, the clear-sky apparent reflectance data sets at each time were synthesized at different time intervals, and cloud detection was implemented based on the clear-sky data set to set dynalnic thresholds. The algorithm is developed by the combination of four dust detection methods, including the BTD(11—12),BTR(BTRc)(11/12),BTR(BTRc)(11/8.6)and D*parameter method, the dust monitoring results were obtained through comprehensive judgment. And the total dust concentration index was constructed by the dust concentration index calculated from the four test conditions to determine the dust intensity.3)The dust monitoring test was carried out with using two different dust detection methods using Himawari-8 satellite data, the results were validated using Ozone Monitoring Instrument and FY3B VIRR,The results showed that dust monitoring results were consistent with the spatial distribution with OMI AI and FY3B VIRR daily dust monitoring products, and reasonable accuracy can be achieved.
