The Kutai Basin(also known as Kutai Basin)is situated in eastern Kalimantan,Indonesia. The basin extends onshore-offshore covering an area of approximately 204,000 sq km.The Kutei Basin is a typical continental margin sag basin, and the second most prolific basin in Indonesia. Most commercial reservoirs that have been found in the basin are mainly concentrated in onshore and offshore Mahakan delta. In this paper,by the analysis of characteristics of regional geology and petroleum geology,we divided the Kutai Basin into five resource assessment units: Upper Kutai Basin,Mahakam delta,deep-water areas,North-Makassar Strait and Pasir sub-basin.According to the results of Monte Carlo simulation, hydrocarbon resources of the Kutei basin is still prolific, the total reserves of oil and gas is 15798 MMboe, including 53.7% of natural gas.Undiscovered oil and gas resources are mainly distributed in deepwater areas of the basin, which account for 66.4% of the total undiscovered resources.Though the analysis,we concluded that the Mahakam delta and deep-water areas both have good petroleum perspective, especially deep-water areas. In this case, the prospect of the deep water areas is better, and it is of high possibility to find large and medium-size oil and gas fields..The exploration of the distal deep-water areas of the basin is under-explored,and it is affected by the distribution of source rocks. The upper Kutei basin and north of Kutei basin have some exploration potential, especially stratigraphic and carbonate reservoirs.
