Lightning is a natural phenomenon going with strong discharge. The event of lightning concerns personal safety, normal operations of public facilities, direct and indirect economic losses in and around nuclear power plant. With the enhancement of lightning protection consciousness,it is becoming increasingly important to carry out risk assessment research of lightning hazards, implement emergency management and risk management system, and then taking effective lightning protection measures. This paper introduced the essential features of lightning current, harmful influence of lightning event. It expounded the characteristic of the waveform, frequency and amplitude from three typical lightning current's mathematical model with simulation software Matlab. This paper also did a series research work on lightning hazard space-time distribution, personal safety and property losses as a case study of taizhou city,Zhejiang Province.By introducing the international latest risk assessment methods of lightning hazards, one specific risk assessment model was established to make a comprehensive lightning hazard assessment of a power plant in Zhejiang Province, including four aspects: risk of loss or permanent injury of human life R1,risk of loss of services to the public R2,risk of loss of economy R4.It provided the guidance for the necessity and depth of lightning protection works carried out in nuclear power plant.Effective lightning protection measures for lightning protection system were put forward according to the assessment result. At the end of the paper is a study of the problems appeared in the assessment process.
