A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Great Barrier Reef

With the drafting and firm implementation of the national strategy to build China into a “Marine Power” in the world,there has been an urgent demand for literature on marine ecology protection and construction for reference.Therefore,the task of translating and introducing advanced foreign ocean-related literature has simultaneously become a must.This translation practice report takes chapters 9-11 of The Great Barrier Reef: An Environmental History as the research object and adopts SDL Trados and Google online translation engine which represent the frontier of the machine translation(MT)technology to explore pre-editing on the one hand,and meanwhile takes the four principles of Skopos,coherence,fidelity and industry orientation to guide the post-editing of the machine translated version.On the one hand,this research is of referential significance in literature;on the other hand,it can enrich the English-Chinese MT technology and contribute to theory and practice of MT to a certain degree.This report focuses on pre-editing strategies of MT supplemented by theoretic exploration of post-editing.As far as MT is concerned,both pre-and post-editing are indispensable.Pre-editing of MT refers to the targeted editing of the source text before machine translation to improve the quality of MT output and reduce the workload of post-editing.In terms of pre-editing of MT,the report proposes 3 aspects through source text format,glossary and grammatical structures to increase the recognition rate of the machine.At the text format level,this report transfers the source text in AZW style to Word style.At the lexical level,the writer started editing through the term base and the word frequency statistics.While at the syntactic level,some special structural words in the substitution construction,coordination construction and elliptical construction were used as the handle for targeted searching and editing,finally pre-editing methods of displacement,addition,deletion,replacement and reduction are concluded.Post-editing refers to the process of modifying the original output of MT to improve the final quality of translation text.In the process of post-editing,the author regards 3 rules(Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule)in Skopos theory as guidance to maintain intratextual coherence and intertextual coherence.At the same time,combining with the particularity of the Marine science and technology text,the author puts forward industry orientation rule as the criteria for post-editing and final polishing,so as to ensure that the translation will not make mistakes in the common sense of the ocean.Through this translation practice,the author fully realizes that pre-editing plays a crucial role in the quality of machine translation,but post-editing is also indispensable.It is hoped that the pre-editing method summarized in this paper and the post-translation editing under the guidance of Skopos theory will attract more researchers to study this field.
