The human settlement environment is a complex system closely related to human life among which, factors such as topography, climate, hydrology and land cover play a leading role in the natural suitability of human settlements.Getting source data by Resources and Environment Data Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences,China Meteorological Data Sharing Network and Geospatial Data Cloud, taking 1 km×1 km as the basic research unit, this paper first established a basic database by terrain, climate, hydrology and land cover, and then analyzed and evaluated the natural suitability of each element of the human settlement environment by using the professional software of Arc GIS,ENVI and SPSS and adopting the methods of window analysis, spatial interpolation methods. On this basis, the correlation coefficient method was used to determine the weight of each factor, and a comprehensive index model of natural suitability of the human settlement environment in the Yangtze River Delta region was established. The natural suitability of the human settlement environment in 1990,2000,and 2010 was evaluated as a whole and in sections. It is divided into the non-adaptive areas, the critical appropriate areas and the appropriate areas. The appropriate zones are divided into underproof suitable areas, moderately suitable areas and highly appropriate areas.Based on the evaluation results, suggestions were put forward for the optimization of the human settlement environment in the study area. The main contents are as follows:(1)According to the evaluation results of each factor,in terms of topographic conditions, more than 93% of them are suitable areas, and the highly appropriate areas of them are 71.6% of the total areas. In terms of climatic conditions, more than 98% of the areas are suitable areas, and the discomfort areas are very few and tend to decrease. In terms of hydrological conditions, more than 60% of the areas are suitable areas, and the uncomfortable areas show an increasing trend. In terms of land cover conditions, about 70% of the areas is suitable areas, and half of them are underproof suitable areas.(2)More than 80% of the Yangtze River Delta is suitable for residential areas, and overall comfort decreases from south to north. The moderate-high suitable areas are mainly distributed in the south and southwest regions where the topography is less fluctuating, the climate is comfortable, the hydrological index is high, and the vegetation coverage is high. The critical and underproof suitable areas are mainly distributed in the north and south parts of the center. The underproof suitable areas are mainly distributed in the northern regions where the climate, hydrology and land cover are all relatively poor, and in the parts of southern regions where the elevation is high and the topography is large.(3)From the analysis of prefecture-level scale,Chizhou,Jinhua, and Taizhou are the most suitable places to live in.The most non-adaptive areas are Yancheng,Taizhou, and Nantong. The suitability of human settlements is higher than the overall level of the whole region, but the general trend that the suitability of human settlements decreased from south to north has not changed. From 1990 to 2010,the suitability of human settlements showed the trend of first falling and then rising as a whole, especially in the eastern coast and northern cities.(4)There is no necessary correlation between human environment suitability and population distribution. This shows that the population distribution is affected by many factors, and natural suitability is just one and not the decisive factor. But this kind of evaluation still has value,in order to build the suitable living environment, pointed out the differences about around and impact factors,so as to adjust measures to local conditions. The purposes of the study are foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses.
