Objectives Explore individual differences in empathy for pain and its cognitive neural mechanisms in the context of a single person or group situations,so as to determine the diffusion of responsibility affects empathy for pain;to explore the role of self-involvement in the process of the diffusion of responsibility affects empathy for pain and its cognitive neural mechanisms. Methods 43 college students were randomly selected as subjects to participate in the experiment.ERP technology was adopted, pictures induction paradigm and pain judgment task were used.In experiment 1,by manipulating the subjects in the context of a single person or group situations,to explore the diffusion of responsibility affects empathy for pain and its cognitive neural mechanisms. In experiment 2,self-involvement was added on the basis of experiment 1,by manipulating whether the harm to others was related to the subjects themselves,to further explore the diffusion of responsibility affect empathy for pain during self-involvement and its cognitive neural mechanism. Results Experiment 1:1 Compared with the group situation(5.92±0.83V),individuals induced smaller P3 component in a single person situation(4.97±0.64V)(P=0.060).2 The incubation period of P3 induced by individual view pain pictures was significantly shorter than that of non-pain pictures(P=0.008).3 Compared with the group situation(364.50 ± 5.67ms),the incubation period of P3 component induced by individual view pain pictures was shorter in a single person situation(349.38±4.36ms)(P=0.039).4 The incubation period of P3 induced by individual view pain pictures was shorter than that of non-pain pictures(P=0.001).Experiment 2:1 In the group condition, the incubation period of N1 component induced by pain pictures was significantly longer than that induced by non-pain pictures when there was self-involvement(P=0.008),while in the group condition,it was the opposite when there was no self-involvement(P=0.059).2 Compared with the group situation(2.56±0.46 V,358.81±4.86ms),the individual could induce greater P3 component(3.84±0.55 V,P=0.003)and longer incubation period(377.99±3.73 ms,P=0.014)in a single person situation.3 The incubation period of P3 induced by individuals with selfinvolvement was significantly longer than that without self-involvement(P=0.020).Conclusions 1 Self-involvement has an impact on empathy for pain.Compared with no self-involvement,having self-involvement can induce a stronger early empathy for pain response, that is,it induces a greater N1 component.2 Self-involvement is playing a regulatory role the diffusion of responsibility affects empathy for pain.Self-involvement can cause stronger diffusion of responsibility effect and less likely to cause empathy for pain, that is,it induces smaller P3 component and prolongs the incubation period of N1 and P3 components.Figure12;Table14;Reference88...
