The East China Sea shelf basin is a Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonic basin developed in the eastern margin of the Eurasian continent. It is located near the subduction zone formed by the subduction of the Pacific plate to the Eurasian plate. It is one of the largest petroleum-bearing basins in eastern China. It is adjacent to the Bohai Bay Basin and the northern continental margin basin group of the South China Sea,which is also called the East China Sea.The huge oil and gas potential of the East China Sea shelf basin has attracted many oil and gas companies to carry out oil and gas exploration, and some progress has been made in the study of the tectonic framework, tectonic evolution and dynamic mechanism of the basin. There is still much controversy about the deformation mechanism of the East China Sea basin. The data show that there are three different explanations for the deformation mechanism of the East China Sea shelf basin, namely, the S-N extensional mechanism, the back-arc extensional mechanism and the strike-slip shear mechanism.Kinematics analysis of the three mechanisms is carried out,and each mechanism corresponds to different stretching directions.Structural physical simulation technology is widely used in the study of various deformation mechanisms, and is considered as an effective means of research.Relevant studies on oblique stretching show that when the boundary of the deformation zone is determined, the change of the stretching direction will cause a strong change in the pattern of the internal fracture system. Therefore, the fault pattern of the East China Sea shelf basin will also be greatly affected by the extension direction. It will be a feasible means to study the deformation mechanism of the East China Sea shelf basin through physical simulation technology. In order to study the Cenozoic tectonic deformation mechanism of the East China Sea shelf basin, experiments were designed to study the extension in different directions.According to the comparison between the experimental results and the actual structural characteristics of the East China Sea shelf basin, the experimental model of S-N-trending extension has the highest similarity with the East China Sea shelf basin, and the East China Sea shelf basin may be formed under the S-N-trending extension movement.Combined with the study of deformation mechanism of large basins such as Bohai Bay Basin,East China Sea Shelf Basin and North South China Sea Margin Basin Group formed in the same period, the extensional deformation mechanism of the eastern margin of the whole Eurasian continent may also be S-N trending movement in Cenozoic.
