Lead-acid batteries have obvious advantages in both the electrochemical performance and especially the production cost, and resultantly dominate the battery market for decades.Compared with traditional lead-acid batteries,valve-regulated lead-acid batteries(VRLA)adopt the poor liquid design which can improve the efficiency of oxygen recombination, reduce the water loss, enhance the cycling life and safety, and hence greatly expand the application scope. However, the unique design requires advanced separators with preferable components and structures.Modifying glass fibers with polyethylene/polyethylene terephthalate(PE/PET)composite fibers can improve both the mechanical strength and resiliency.PE/PET fibers have a heterogeneous structure in which the PE layers benefit the binding with glass fibers by melting and the PET core provide a strong structural support.Simultaneously, the PE layers are hydrophobic and as a result offer channels for oxygen transmission. In order to clarify the impact of multiple factors, orthogonal methods are adopted to design the experiments.Orthogonal experiment is easy to operate and can accurately measure the optimal plan and the importance order of factors.Study finds pH=3.5,90% fine glass fiber(diameter 1.2 ?m),dispersant(PEO)concentration of 0.02%,PE/PET composite fiber with sheath-core of 20%(wt.)received baffles optimal performance.under conditions of optimal performance When using the optimized parameters to produce AGM,the tensile strength and resilience are signally improved, from 0.54 kN/m and 94.8% to 0.66 kN/m and 95.8%.After assembling into batteries, the optimized AGM demonstrates better reaction efficiency(100%)and cyclic capability(325 cycles)than some commercial ones of 96.1% and 304 cycles. This work can promote the application of composite fibers in VRLA and offer a useful reference for high-performance separators' research and marketization.
