Emerging in recent years,the Zr-based glass is a new kind of bulk bulk metallic glass.Zr-based glasses exhibit very high Glass-Forming Ability(GFA)and excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance,which promise a great potential structural material in engineering practice.However,to prepare Zr-based glass,it needs repeated melting the ingots by conventional approach that has complicate operation and high energy consumption.The study devote to finding the new method of preparation-Heredity method.Firstly it needs to prepare master alloys by quenching and casting,and then prepare the very bulk metallic glass with right proportion of master alloys.The Glass-Forming Ability(GFA)and mechanical properties of the Zr-based glass were discussed.Using conventional method and heredity method to prepare Zr52.8Cu29.1Ni7.3Al9.8Y1 prepare bulk metallic glass in three casting temperature of 1523 K?1623 K and 1723 K,and then obtain six samples.Firstly metallic glasses' Glass-Forming Ability as well as its critical size,was investigated in the paper by using XRD analysis and DSC analysis.The result indicates the Metallic glasses Glass-Forming Ability has been improved clearly after being prepared by heredity method in 1523 K;Glass-Forming Ability by heredity method is only a slight increase than the conventional in 1623 K;two methods of bulk metallic glass forming ability is almost same.XRD results showed the alloy all contain small amounts of crystal in 1523 K,are completely amorphous in 1623 K and 1723 K,which are prepared by two methods.It indicates that increasing the casting temperature has a greater impact on Glass-Forming Ability;DSC results indicate that the supercooled liquid region of heredity method have a more significant improvement than conventional method.Then the two samples are analysed with its crystallization kinetics,and the samples were calculated about its activation energy of crystallization with Kissinger and Ozawa equations.The results show that the activation of the heredity method are greater than the conventional method,in other words,Glass-Forming Ability of the heredity method is better than the conventional method from the kinetics analyzes in 1523 K.Tensile test and compression test on Metallic glasses were carried out.The fracture section of glassy alloys was observed.Test results indicate that casting temperature will influence the mechanical properties of the Zr-based glass.Among two group of samples prepared by two methods,glassy alloy casted at 1723 K exhibit higher tensile strength,higher compressive strength than those casted at 1523 K and 1623 K,which indicates a large cooling rate is conducive to form the amorphous.At the same time,the sample of heredity method has a significant improve in tensile strength and compressive strength in comparison to the conventional method at 1523 K By analyzing the picture of SEM of fracture,Zr-based glass samples were destroyed as shear fracture style.Comparatively glassy alloys prepared by new method were observed more intensive veins in the picture of fracture section in 1523 K,and the toughness to be better.
