Applications of gamma rays have involved every aspect of human life,gamma rays not only bring benefits to human but also harm the human body even to the next generation.The price of traditional shielding materials is higher,so the work of looking for wumart and cheap shielding materials has always been a significant research subject.Vanadium slag and boron-rich slag are discharged in the process of smelting;the process of utilization is complex and will bring environment pollutions.Some scholars have researched in shielding materials of boron-rich slag;the results showed that the materials had shielding effect.Fe,Si,V,Ti and so on in vanadium slag and boron-rich slag are used for the preparation of shielding materials,so these two slags can be used for the preparation of shielding materials.Using vanadium slag and rich boron slag as the research objects,the research work is carried out in this paper,specifics are as follows:Vanadium slag and epoxy were used to the preparation of V-epoxy composites and the composites were studied by mechanical properties testing,thermal analysis and gamma ray shielding testing.For the epoxy,the density was 1.12g/cm3 with the bending strength of 74.38MPa and highest temperature resistance of about 240?.The linear attenuation coefficient was 0.05081cm-1,the mass attenuation coefficient was 0.04537cm2/g,the HVL was 13.639cm,the TVL was 45.325cm and the mean free path was 19.681cm.Vanadium slag was evenly dispersed in a physical form embedded in epoxy matrix surface of a uniform sample but with a slightly particle reunion,few bubbles formed because of air did not discharge in time.The density of the composites was 1.38-2.51 g/cm3.The bending strength of the composites was higher than standard strength of composites and the highest temperature resistance was about 240 ?.For the composites,the linear attenuation coefficient was 0.06624-0.1467cm-1,the mass attenuation coefficient was 0.04800-0.05845cm2/g,the HVL was 4.724-10.462cm,the TVL was 15.699-34.768cm and the mean free path was 6.817-15.097cm.The more vanadium slag the better shielding effect;when the adding amount of vanadium slag was 900,the shielding effect was best.After gamma ray irradiation,V-epoxy composites were studied by mechanical properties testing,fourier transform infrared(FTIR)spectrum analysis and thermal analysis.The results showed that the color of epoxy changed from light yellow to dark brown,the density decreased and the aging degree was lower.V-epoxycomposites were not damaged after irradiation,the density decreased due to the degradation of epoxy,major shielding components and highest temperature resistancewere both not changed.Bending strength of pure epoxy and composites were both improved.The bubbles formed during the pouring of the composites could not be eliminated by irradiation.The more vanadium slag,the better absorptive capacity and shielding effect.Vanadium slag,boron-rich slag and epoxy were used to the preparation of VB-epoxy composites and the composites were studied by mechanical properties testing,thermal analysis and gamma ray shielding testing.The results showed that the vanadium slag and boron-rich slag were evenly dispersed in a physical form embedded in epoxy matrix plus the surface of sample was uniform but with a slightly particle reunion.The density of the composites was 2.98-3.07g/cm3.Bending strength was higher than standard strength of composites and the highest temperature resistance was about 240 ?.For the composites,the linear attenuation coefficient was 0.14282-0.16966cm-1,the mass attenuation coefficient was 0.04792-0.05534cm2/g,the HVL was 4.079-4.853cm,the TVL was 13.555-16.127cm,and the mean free path was 5.886-7.003cm.The more the vanadium slag,the better shielding effect,when the adding amount of vanadium slag was 810 and boron-rich slag was 90,the shielding effect was best.The shielding property of VB-epoxy composites was higher than V-composites and the boron-rich slag/epoxy composites,also boron-rich slag could improve neutron shielding capability.
