In recent years, with the rapid advancement of China's urbanization process, rapid economic growth has also triggered the contradiction between human and land and a series of ecological and environmental issues. As we all know,China is a country characterized by its large population base, and the average per capita land resources are seriously inadequate. The contradiction between human and land is increasingly prominent.Based on the current situation of the national land conditions, how to achieve the maximization of land benefits becomes more important. As an efficient land use model, intensive land use can relieve the pressure brought by the growing population, which is the inevitable result of the city's pursuit of sustainable development of land use.Intensive land use in our country is developing rapidly at present. However, due to it's easy to cause environmental issues in surrounding areas during the process of development, land intensive exploitation often destory the ecological environment.what's more, land resources are closely related to the natural environment. On the one hand, land use directly affects the surrounding ecological environment. On the other hand, ecological environment is the basis for sustainable land utilization. There are interactive effects and complement between these two factors,so if we only focus on one of the elements,it will aggravate the contradiction between human and land resources.Hence, the coordinated development between ecological environment and intensive land use can not only help to reduce the conflict between land requirements and ecological environment protection, but also promote the sustainable development of regional social economy.Xiangyang is located in the northwestern of Hubei Province, which has a solid industrial base, rich tourism resources and excellent natural environment. In the past 20 years, inappropriate land development approaches have exerted bad impacts on ecological environment during the process of the rapid progress of urbanization. As result,Xiangyang faces serious human-land conflicts and deterioration of the ecological environment. This paper uses a multi-factor comprehensive evaluation method to quantitatively evaluate intensive land use and ecological environment in Xiangyang, and then through establishing coupling model to calculate coupling coordination degree and coupled development degree, define the degree of coordination between intensive land use and ecological environment as well as further analysis of coordination status.Findings are as following:(1)Since 1995,the level of intensive land use in Xiangyang showed an upward trend. The degree of intensive land use increased at a relatively slow rate in 1995-2005;It increased significantly mainly because of the more rapid economic development during 2005-2015.Judging from the differences between regions, the areas with relatively higher level of intensive use are mainly concentrated in the northeastern of Xiangyang, such as Zaoyang,Yicheng and Laohekou where social and economic development levels are relatively high.(2)Since 1995,the level of ecological environment in Xiangyang showed a downward trend. In the period of 2000-2010,the decline rate was relatively large. The decline rate slowed down during 2010-2015.The areas with higher ecological environment are mainly concentrated in the central of Xiangyang. The major regional differences are caused mainly by the regional conditions, natural endowments, different development policies and urban positioning.(3)The coupling degree between land intensive use and ecological environment is the trend of increasing and decreasing in the period from 1995 to 2015.It increased during 1995-2010,slightly decreased in 2010-2015.The degree of coupling coordination has undergone a transition from low to high. From the perspective of regional differences,it can be divided into uplift and inverted U classes according to the trend of change. The uplift classes including urban district,Nanzhang and Gucheng, the three areas of the coupling coordination degree is rising, and the intensive land use and the development of the ecological environment are gradually synchronizing and the degree of coordination is getting higher and higher. The inverted U class includes Zaoyang,Yicheng,Laohekou, and Baokang. The gap between the intensive land use and the ecological environment in these four regions has changed from large to small and then to large, and the coupling coordination has risen first and then declined.(4)From 1995 to 2015,the coupled development of intensive land use and ecological environment in Xiangyang showed an upward trend, and the coordinated development status shifted from the coordinated development of medium and low levels to the coordinated development of higher levels. There was a huge gap between the intensive land use and the ecological environment before 2000.After 2000,the degree of intensive land use continued to increase, the deterioration of the ecological environment slowed, and the gap between the two gradually narrowed. At the same time, land intensive land use and the level of the ecological environment all of them are above the middle,so the level of coupling and coordination is constantly increasing. They were mainly concentrated in areas with higher levels of economic development in the northeast of Xiangyang before 2005.They were distributed in the central regions where economic development was also focused on ecological environment protection after 2005.This paper use a multi-factor comprehensive evaluation method to evaluate the land intensive utilization and ecological environment in Xiangyang, and uses a coupling model to analyze the coordination status between intensive land use and ecological environment, clarifying and proposing the problems in the coordination process. The results can provide theoretical basis for future scientific use of land and protection of ecological environment in Xiangyang.
