4-vinylpyridine can be easily became quaternary ammonium salt,which synthesis functional products.As a polar monomer,the polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine usually use the free radical polymerization.While using the ionic polymerization,the reaction is so fast that cannot be control.Finding a way has a condition which is easier to reach and control is the purpose.In the paper we discuss using different Lewis pairs to initiated polymerization of 4-vinylpyridine.What's more,we explore choice of Lewis base and Lewis acids using in the polymerization and we found that the PDI of the polymerization becomes narrow,conversion becoming higher with the growth of steric hindrance of the Lewis base.Lewis acids using in the polymerization could not be highly interacted with monomer,which would obstruct polymerization.We also discuss other condition like temperature,solvent and ratio of Lewis base and Lewis acid.Under different temperature we found room temperature(25 ?),could be better.In polymerization we use found different polarity solvent,the conversion get higher with the growth of polarity and narrow PDI.The molar ratio of Lewis bases and Lewis acids also with the growth of Lewis acids the speed of reaction became faster with a lower conversion.We use Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer to observe the progress of polymerization,and speculate the mechanism of the polymerization.We also explore polymerization of methyl acrylate and butyl acrylate with the same condition of 4VP.In the same condition,we successful achieve the copolymerization between 4VP and acrylate.We found and could be the best option Lewis pairs initiated acrylate is tricyclohexyl phosphine and triisobutyl aluminum.Using NMR to confirm the copolymerization between 4VP and acrylate apply Lewis pairs polymerization,and analysis the composition of copolymerization products.
