Recently, coordination polymers(CPs)are becoming a hot topic, not only for the intriguing topological structures, but also for their potential applications as functional materials in photocatalysis, molecular storage, fluorescence, electrical conductivity, and magnetism.Among numerous strategies for constructing CPs,the self-assembly of transition metal salts with N-donor ligands under hydrothermal condition is an effective method. In the formation process of final structures, metal ions and organic ligands are intrinsic factors, and a subtle alteration may lead to a novel architecture. It is well-known that the design and selection of proper metal ions and organic ligands are quite critical in the formation of the resulting CPs.Under hydrothermal condition, five CPs were synthesized by adopting three imidazole ligands, four polycarboxylates and different metal ions.CP 1 features a 3D 3,3,4,4,5-connected framework.CP 2 possesses a three-fold interpenetrating 3D framework with mog topology. The structure of CP 3 is a 3D 3-fold interpenetrating sqc12 framework.CP 4 represents the first example of 3D cgh5 structure.CP 5 exhibits a 1D chain, which is extended into a 2D supramolecular layer by the hydrogen bonds.Hydrothermal reactions of four benzimidazole ligands, two polycarboxylates and various metal ions generate another five CPs.CPs 6 and 7 both display 2D layer, which can be further extended into 3D supramolecular framework via the hydrogen bondings.CP 8 presents a 1D zigzag chain, further extended into a 3D supramolecular framework via the hydrogen bondings.CP 9 features a three-fold interpenetrating 3D framework, and CP 10 exhibits a two-dimensional layer.CPs 1~10 all own the high thermal stability and strong fluorescent property. The diffuse-reflectance UV-vis spectra indicated that CPs 1~10 are all potential semiconductive materials. In addition,CPs 1~10 are all excellent candidates as photocatalysts in decomposing MB under UV light irradiation.
