The freeze and thaw cycle can be identified as one of the many factors that lead to concrete deterioration. An ability to withstand freeze and thaw cycles will improve the durability of the concrete. It is therefore important that concrete mixes be designed to contain air to increase the durability of the concrete.Proper air intake system helps prevent frost and thaw damage. The application of nanotechnology in concrete has added a new dimension to the efforts to improve its properties and its durability.Nanomaterial's,by virtue of their very small particle size can affect the concrete properties by altering the microstructure. The purpose of this thesis has been to evaluate the mechanical performance and the durability of Portland cement with nano-materials subject to freezethaw. The mechanical performance and the durability test were tested through the use of Chinese standard GB/T 500082-2009.An experimental investigation has been carried out by adding some carbon nanotube or nano-Ti O2 into cement. The tests conducted on it shows a considerable increase in early-age compressive strength and a small increase in the overall compressive strength of concrete. The strength increase was observed with the increase at 0.1% b.w.c of both Nano-materials used. The SEM micrographs support the results and show that the microstructure of the hardened concrete is improved on addition of Carbon Nano-tube and Titanium dioxide.
