Qipao is one of the traditional Chinese women clothing.It has been developing since Qing dynasty till now for more than 300 years.After various periods of improvement and inheritance,Qipao now appears on the world stage with a new look.This paper focuses on the application and design of pleats in Qipao.The pleats involved in this paper are those permanent set pleats which formed by machine or hand made,through the process of high temperature.The application design of pleats in Qipao not only can inherit Chinese classic national costumes culture spirit,but also can develop a new design method of Qipao.This also accords with the clothing aesthetic and comfortable wearing requirements of women in morden society.It is the perfect combination of tradition and modernity,and also the combination of hand craft and machine manufacture.This paper summarizes the typical characteristics of Qipao from the definition,origin and development of Qipao.At the same time,provide an overview of the definition,characteristics and development status of pleats clothing.It creatively puts forward a method of the combination.And state the artistic and practical value of the application of pleats in Qipao.The author studies the design and development process of pleated Qipao,which is mainly analyzed from four aspects: fabric selection,color matching,style design and decoration details.From pleats type,color,decoration three aspects to study the concrete expression of the pleats form aesthetic feeling in Qipao.During the process of practice,constantly adjust design and technological process,through collation,analysis and comparison methods.Design Qipao by combining with pleats clothing design principle and characteristic elements of Qipao,such as collar,placket,piping,vents.To proof the theory from the practical operation.Through design and actual operation,constantly discover the problems.Then improve the technology and get to the method.This paper combine the recent hot pleats element with Chinese classical Qipao elements ably,finds out the method of application of pleats in Qipao and manufacture process.On the one hand,this method can enrich the category of Qipao,provide more choices for consumers.On the other hand,making use of pleats stretchable features develop a new method of pattern making and the sewing.Design practical Qipao for those mostly do not have perfect shape,so that Qipao culture can get better inheritance and development.
