Catalytic Synthesis Of C₁₆ Guerbet Alcohol And Study Of Disodium Guerbet Hexadecyl Sulfosuccinate

C16 Guerbet alcohol(2-hecyl-1-decanol,C16 GA)was synthesized by employing CuO-NiO catalyst with KOH through Guerbet reaction of n-octanol.And disodium Guerbet hexadecyl sulfosuccinate(HDSS)was synthesized through esterification of C16 GA with maleic anhydride and sulfonation of the mono ester with Na2SO3Effects of catalyst support,CuO-NiO loading,n(CuO)?n(NiO)and addition of a third component added on the catalytic activity of CuO-NiO catalyst were investigated.The results indicate that:(1)CuO gains a better catalytic activity than NiO;(2)CuO and NiO have synergistic effect;(3)Adding ZnO or MgO to CuO-NiO catalyst improves octanol conversion and leads to no obvious promotion of C16 GA yield.The optimum CuO-NiO catalyst is: CaCO3 as support,CuO-NiO loading 30 % and n(CuO)?n(NiO)=1?2.Effects of reaction temperature,reaction time and catalyst dosage on synthesis of C16 GA were studied.When C16 GA was synthesized under reaction temperature 240 ? for 1 h with 0.1 % the best CuO-NiO catalyst and 3.0 % KOH,the yield and the selectivity reached 83.5 % and 87.3 %,respectively.Effects of catalyst,catalyst dosage and addition of solvent on the synthesis of HDSS were investigated.When C16 GA reacted with maleic anhydride at a molar ratio 1.2?1 under 80 ? for 3 h by adding 0.4 % toluene-p-sulfonic acid as catalyst,the esterification rate was 98.0 %;when HDSS was synthesized under 80 ? for 3 h with 30 % isopropanol,Na2SO3(n(Na2SO3)?n(maleic anhydride)=1?1)and water addition(dosage of water was calculated based on the theriotical active matter of HDSS 30 %),the active matter content was 19.2 %.HDSS has good surface activity,foam property,wetting ability and emulsifying property,which can be used as foaming agent and foam stabilizer applied in some industrial products such as detergents.
