The Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is one of the six largest urban agglomerations in the world, and it is the most developed urbanization area with the highest degree of urban agglomeration in China. With the formation of high economic growth and high population density in this area, people pay more and more attention to the environmental problems in this area.As an economic pioneer in other regions of the country, the study of the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration is not only the need to achieve comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development in the region, but also provides a reference for the study of the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution in other urban agglomerations in China.Based on the spatial panel data of economic growth and environmental pollution variables of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration from 2006 to 2016,this paper first describes the process and current situation of economic and environmental changes of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, and focuses on the empirical study of the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration.Based on the EKC model, this paper uses the fixed effect method and the lag term to analyze the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, considering the reverse impact of environmental pollution on economic growth.Based on the empirical study of the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, this paper analyses the direct effect and regulation effect. From the direct effect analysis,it is known that the air pollution and water pollution of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration have been improved, but its economic growth is still under great environmental pressure, and it is urgent to strengthen the management and control of industrial solid waste at present. In the analysis of regulation effect, this paper analyses the regulation effect of economic growth on environmental pollution from the perspective of provincial and municipal classification at different stages of development. It is known that from the perspective of provincial classification at different stages of development,it is urgent to strengthen the control of industrial solid waste production in both developed and developing regions. As a late developed area,Anhui's economic growth is facing greater environmental pressure than the first developed areas of Shanghai,Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and it still needs to strengthen the control of industrial smoke(dust)and industrial wastewater. However, between balancing industrial sulfur dioxide emissions and economic growth,Anhui,as the economically underdeveloped area, has not embarked on the road of "development before governance" in the western industrialized countries, but on the road of "development while governance".From the perspective of municipal classification at different stages of development, there is no correlation between high economic growth and low industrial sulfur dioxide emissions in developed first-class urban areas(first-tier cities and new-tier cities)and backward second-tier urban areas(second-tier cities and below),so it is not believed that economic growth itself can solve the problem of industrial sulfur dioxide emissions in the environment. And there is an urgent need to strengthen the control of industrial solid waste production in both regions. This paper hopes that by studying the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution in the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, which is nationally representative,it can provide a reference for the study of the impact of economic growth on environmental pollution in other urban agglomerations in China in the future. This paper also hopes that, through the empirical analysis,it can provide policy makers with corresponding policy recommendations, and provide the government with effective ways to balance the relationship between national economic growth and environmental pollution.
