In this thesis, kinds of novel V and Ni complexes supported by N-aryl-acenphthen-iminoquinone Ligands were designed and synthesized. The complexes were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis,NMR,elemental analysis,FI-IR,UV-Vis,DFT calculation, etc. The application of these complexes in the polymerization of ethylene was investigated. We also explored the redox activity of these ligands in the reaction and catalytic processes. In the third chapter,a series of BIAN ligands with different substituents and the corresponding vanadium(?)complexes were synthesized and well characterized by infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis.Among these vanadium complexes, the complexes 1,2,and 4 were further characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. When activated by Al Et2 Cl,these well-defined vanadium complexes exhibited moderate to high activities in ethylene polymerization affording linear polyethylene with high molecular weight. However, when MAO was used as co-catalyst,ultra high molecular-weight polymers were obtained with decreasing activity. In the fourth chapter, series of low-valent Ni complexes and bisligated Ni complexes have been synthesized by the reactions of BIAN ligands with different Ni complexes. The valence state of nickel and the oxide state of ligands in the complexes were investigated by NMR,X-ray diffraction analysis and DFT calculation. These complexes were evaluated as catalysts for ethylene polymerization to give branched polyethylene with various branch degrees. We also investigated that the mechanism of ethylene polymerization was similar to the mechanism of bis-olefin cationic polymerization by Phillips Chromium catalysts.
