ObjectiveThrough questionnaires and health checkups for residents in the polluted villages and non-polluted villages,And testing of local groundwater and vegetables,To investigate the health effects of chromium pollution on the general population.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted,Three villages downstream of a ferroalloy plant were selected as polluted villages and four villages 50 miles away from the plant were selected as non-polluted villages.Permanent residents aged 18 years or above living in local for long-term without occupational chromium exposure were sampled as study population.A questionnaire-based survey about residents health status was applied to investigate the health outcomes that were potentially related with chromium pollution,The content includes:personal basic information, personal health and other information.Collecting fasting venous blood and urine,As well as local groundwater and vegetables to test.Use SPSS19.0 statistical analysis software to analyze the data.Comparing the indicators of groundwater chromium, blood chromium, urine chromium, blood routine and the prevalence of disease among residents in the polluted villages and the non-polluted villages. The correlation between variables was analyzed using Pearson linear correlation.Unconditional logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the effects of chromium pollution on the prevalence of local residents.ResultsThe hexavalent chromium concentration range of groundwater in the polluted villages is <0.004 ~ 28.34mg/L,no hexavalent chromium detected in the non-polluted villages,The chromium content in groundwater in the polluted villages is higher than that in the non-polluted villages(P<0.05);There is no difference in vegetables chromium content between the polluted villages and the non-polluted villages(P>0.05);The prevalence of gastric ulcer, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, nasal dryness, swelling of the nasal mucosa, congestion of the nasal mucosa, and burning of the nose is higher in the polluted villages than in the non-polluted villages,In the polluted villages, local residents have a higher risk of stomach ulcers, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, nasal dryness, and nasal mucosal swelling(P<0.05);the levels of blood chromium and in the polluted villages higher than those in non-polluted villages(P<0.05);There is no difference in urine chromium content between the polluted villages and the non-polluted villages(P>0.05);The results of blood routine in the polluted villages are different fome those in non-polluted villages(P<0.05);blood chromium of residents in polluted villages is related to blood routine(P<0.05).ConclusionsThe local groundwater chromium content in the polluted villages is higher than the non-polluted villages.the levels of blood chromium and in the polluted villages higher than those in non-polluted villages,And the results of blood routine in the polluted villages are different fome those in non-polluted villages, blood chromium of residents in polluted villages is related to blood routine. The prevalence of gastric ulcer, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, nasal dryness, swelling of the nasal mucosa, congestion of the nasal mucosa, and burning of the nose is higher in the polluted villages than in the non-polluted villages. The chromium pollution in the living environment may have a certain impact on the health of residents.
