Titanium vanadium carbide solid solution powders were synthesized by carbotherm al reduction of ammonium metavanadate,graphite and titanium dioxide mixtures.Titan ium vanadium carbide cermets were also fabricated via powder metallurgy process.Th e phase composition in the whole reduction process,the influence of Ti/V and milling time on the properties of titanium vanadium carbide solid solution powders were exa mined by XRD,SEM and DSC analysis.The carbon coefficient was optimized.Result s showed that the carbothermal reduction of ammonium metavanadate and titanium dio xide mixtures is beneficial to the whole reduction process due to increased contacting areas.Single phase Ti VC2 with good crystallinity was obtained after second reduction when the carbon coefficient was 0.80.The influence of milling time,sintering procedure,Ti/V and Ti N addition on the microstructure and properties of titanium vanadium carbide cermet were investigated.R esults showed that proper parameters were milling time of 72 hours,homogenization t emperature of 600?,presintering temperature of 1100?,sintering temperature of 1410?,Ti/V of 5:5,Ti N addition of 10% and molybdenum of 5%.With these parameter s,the cermet has best mechanical property and uniform microstructure with fine grain sizes.The blending strength can attain 1002 MPa and the Vickers hardness was 1662 HV.
