The electrophoretic display based on ambient light illumination has a great advantage of energy conservation and high portability because of bistable display,while this display has long response time(in seconds)and low contrast(less than 10).The electrophoretic reflective eBook can not play color video.The electrowetting display technology with hydrophobic material can solve the problems of slow refresh speed and disability of color display.However,this kind of display using absorptive materials such as black or colored pixel materials,has a serious loss of backlight and the contrast is relatively low.How to reduce the loss of backlight and increase the display contrast becomes a key point of electrowetting display.Surface plasmon resonance(SPR)on the metal microstructure can inspire special optical phenomena like wavelength-selective transmission or reflection determined by the period and structural parameters.Recently,SPR also has a broad development in the area of display such as color filter and polarizer.Taking the absorption of traditional electrowetting display and the property of SPR's sensitivity to the adjacent material's refractive index into consideration,we put forward a novel modulator of transmissive spectra based on metallic nanowire gratings.This modulator has the advantages of simple structure,high colority and contrast,etc.In this paper,three pitches of bilayer metallic nanowire gratings with red,green and blue colors were respectively designed by simulation.In experiment,gratings with pitch 520 nm and aluminum thickness 50 nm were fabricated.And with the ambient materials changing from air to sucrose solution,the switching from bright green color state to dark state was achieved.The contrast could reach 122.This study indicated a tunable spectral filter based on surface plasmon resonance and will contribute to the novel electrowetting display in the future.The main research works are listed as below:Firstly,we introduced and analyzed the structure and principle of the electrophoretic display and electro-wetting display.Secondly,we introduced the basic theory and the common excitation method of SPR.The application of SPR in the field of sensor and optics based on the metallic nanowire gratings was emphatically discussed.Thirdly,based on the method of rigorous coupled wave analysis and the theory of surface plasmon resonance,the simulation design got the transmission of red,green and blue color(three sub pixel).In experiment,by the way of laser interference exposure and electron beam evaporation,gratings with certain parameters were fabricated.From the transmission spectra of the gratings,we proved that the device based on metallic nanowire gratings was available of color display and brightness adjustment.Lastly,this article proposed a kind of electrowetting display units based on BMNG.We introduced the fabrication flow and working method of the new units,which paved a way for further investigation.
