Silk was one of the greatest inventions of the Chinese people and a cultural symbol recognized by people of ethnic group of Han.It also made great contributions to the cultural history of China and gave a profound influence over the world human civilization through the Silk Road.China was also the first country that widely used natural raw lacquer in the world,and that’s why the raw lacquer was also called Chinese lacquer.The technology combination of painting and silk weaving is not only the combination of craftsmanship,but also the crystallization of two national treasures.In last century,a well-preserved lacquered coronet was excavated in Changsha Mawangdui,Hubei Province(the origin of the lacquering technology could be traced back to this period or earlier),then it was used as the official garment and became popular in different dynasties,known as “Black Gauze Cap”,a hat for officers in the government in the past.This hat had been used for this purpose until the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty.We could also see the use of lacquered yarn in golden window curtain of Qing Dynasty under Qianlong Emperor’s reign.After this period,this kind of craftsmanship was gradually obsolete.The technology,form and function of the lacquer yarn process showed its unique characteristics in different dynasties.Its unique texture,processing and cultural meanings made it different from other fabrics.Through both practical and theoretical research,this paper studied the artistic expression of traditional craft materials in practical design from the perspective of the composite characteristics of lacquer yarn and special material touch.Therefore,the author put forward some challenges to be tackled: 1.History review of lacquer yarn technology and its current status in the field of art design.2.Analysis on the lacquer yarn material and production process and discuss the approach of redesign.3.Discuss the way how the functional features of lacquer yarn continue in the design.4.The visual presentation and expression of the aesthetic view of yarn.5.Discuss how to apply it as an art carrier in current environment.In this study,from the material,technology,culture,and carrier form,the author explored the different expressions of lacquering process.The author also proposed his unique ideas to explore the practical application of lacquering yarn by putting forward the creative method of lacquering craftsmanship,which provides a new research view of traditional craftsmanship in the future.By placing the traditional yarn lacquering process in the contemporary context,and in retro-respect of the traditional production process through sample study,this paper discussed the evolution of traditional lacquered yarn process in contemporary art design.The paper introduced new approaches in experiment of material and processing and interpreted the cultural reflection of traditional lacquered yarn in its design phase,which expressed the aesthetic characteristics of hidden order.The paper also applied the actual practice to discuss the application of traditional processing in the current design environment,creating a dialogue across time and space between contemporary and traditional craftsmanship.
