Mandalay,situated in the central part of Myanmar,has a population of 1.4 million and the population growth rate is 2.5%.Urban Drainage System(UDS)in Mandalay has faced the problems as no policies and regulatory framework for flooding and discharging wastewater quality to the natural water bodies with rapid urbanization and industrialization.It is necessary for Mandalay city to make a future plan,the proper drainage system,treatment system,the policies and wastewater management,which can reduced the flooding and improve water quality for forecasting future urbanization like considering the land use in the urban area and also population.The objectives of this research are to investigate the existing drainage system and to develop the model using Storm Water Management Model(SWMM)on Thingazar creek,Mandalay,to study the sustainable drainage system;to improve the water quality,urban water cycle,reduce the environmental impacts and compare between the existing condition and using sustainable drainage system.In Thingazar creek,catchment areas are facing problems flooding,water pollution due to the heavy rainfall.Some areas are always faced flooding due to the lack of proper drainage system.The EPA Storm Water Management Model(SWMM)is a dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model used for single event or long-term(continuous)simulation of runoff quantity and quality from primarily urban areas.This model can be used runoff and water quality forecast,drainage simulation and drainage network system verification and management.Required data were obtained from water and Sanitation Department,Mandalay City Development Committee(MCDC).In this analysis,existing drainage system had faced many issues(hydraulic problems,water quality,and the lack of proper drainage system).For future,it will be designed with sustainable drainage systems(SUDS,such as ponds and wetlands,infiltration drain and rainwater harvesting).How to improve the drainage systems and environmental impacts with urbanization by SUDS were discussed.Sustainable drainage system(SUDS)are open solutions,designed to recreate the natural methods of stormwater management.It can reduce the peak flows and also improved water quality.Sustainable drainage system(SUDS)are used for design on water quality,water quantity,amenity,and biodiversity is equilibrium.It can be that SWMM model can assist the drainage engineers and local authorities of Mandalay City in decision making the improvement of urban drainage.
