The volumetric errors of a 3-axis machining center can be determined by measuring the displacement error along different lines in the machine's work zone.Diagonal and stepdiagonal measurements are two different ways to measure the volumetric errors of the machine.Much research had been conducted on measurement methods previously, but volumetric errors of diagonal and step-diagonal measurements are not analyzed on the basis of mean volumetric error. This research presents the experimental error analysis of diagonal and step-diagonal measurement method.Renishaw's XL-80 laser interferometer is used to measure lines on different paths.Volumetric errors are measured on six different paths by applying step-diagonal measurement method. The initial and final points of step-diagonal measurement are the same as the diagonal line measurement. All the diagonal and step-diagonal measurements are provided step by step. For the comparison of measurement results a mathematical model is developed.Diagonal measurement provided better results as it has a less volumetric mean error then step-diagonal measurement method.Errors of line measurement varies by changing the positon and height of a line measured in a working volume. The purpose of these experimental results is to present a better understanding of mean volumetric error behavior of two different extensively used measurement methods.
