Ti6Al4V titanium alloy has become the most widely used metal implant material due to its excellent corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and machinability. However, clinical research has indicated that, during service,Ti6Al4V would be eroded by body fluids and release metal ion Al3+ and V2+ that produce toxic side effects to the human body.In addition, bacteria can easily infect Ti6Al4V during surgery and induce postoperative complications of the host.In this paper, based on the problems of corrosion and bacteria infection ofTi6Al4V in clinical practice,Cu-doped Tantalum oxide multilayer coating was prepared on the surface of Ti6Al4V by magnetron sputtering. The investigation on the microstructure, phase composition, corrosion resistance, and antibacterial properties of the coatings was carried out systematically.Three kind of Cu-doped Tantalum oxide multilayer coating with corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties, namely Cu-Ta2O5/Ta2O5/Ta2O5-TiO2/TiO2/Ti(code Cu-MTa2O5),CuO-TaxOy/TaxOy/TaxOy-TiO2/TiO2/Ti(code CuO-MTaxOy)and CujO-TaxOy/TaxOy/TaxOy-TiO2/TiO2/Ti(code CujO-MTaxOy),were prepared on the surface of Ti6Al4V by magnetron sputtering. All these coatings contain five-layer film,in which the outermost layer(the fifth layer)is antibacterial, the fourth layer plays a vital role in corrosion protection, the third to the first layer is an intermediate layer, which is used to enhance the binding strength of coating/substrate system. The microstructure and performance of Cu-MTa2O5 multilayer coating were studied. The result showed that the coating performs as an amorphous structure, and the grain size, average roughness, and contact angle of the coating surface increase with the increased Cu-doped content. The Cu element in the coating present as Cu2O and CuO and chemical valence state of Ta element is Ta5+.Ta2O5-TiO2/TiO2/Ti composite intermediate layer increases binding strength between the Ta2O5 coating and the Ti6Al4V substrate by about 190%.As Cu-doped content increases, the antibacterial property of the coating is enhanced, and the corrosion resistance shows a trend of decreasing first and then increasing. The effect of the sputtering method of copper oxide on the microstructure and performance of N-MTaxOy(N=CuO,CujO)multilayer coating was investigated. The result showed that when Cu content in CuO-MTaxOy(code N1)and CujO-MTaxOy(code N2)is 0.94 wt%and 0.82 wt%,respectively. The surface of the N1 sample present hydrophobic, and the surface of the N2 sample show hydrophilic. In the N1 and N2 samples,Cu elements present as CuO and Cu2O,respectively,while the Ta element both are two kinds of valence state, namely Ta5+ and Ta4+.Compared to the N2 sample, the H3/E2 ratio value of the N1 sample enhances 149%,and the corrosion resistance and antibacterial property of the N1 sample increase and decrease, respectively. The effect of incorporation contents of copper oxide on microstructure and performance of N-MTaxOy(N=CuO,CujO)multilayer coating was discussed. The results showed that the coating present as amorphous structure, and the surface roughness show a trend of decreasing first and then increase with increasing CuO incorporation content.Ta,Cu,O,and Ti Element are distributed throughout the coating, and the phenomenon of element diffusion in the coating is significant. As CuO-doped content increase, the hydrophobicity, corrosion resistance, and antibacterial properties of the coating samples were increased. The bonding strength between the TaxOy coating and the Ti6Al4V substrate is improved 155 times by adding a TaxOy-TiO2/TiO2/Ti composite interlayer. The research result on CujO-MTaxOy multilayer coating showed that the coating present as an amorphous structure, and the size of surface grains increase with increasing CuO-doped content. The coating has excellent antibacterial properties but shows a decrease in the corrosion resistance with increasing CuO concentration in the coating.
