As a new type of smart material,Giant Magnetostrictive Material(GMM)is widely used in magnetic-sound transducers,magneto-mechanical drivers,various new sensors and the application of thin film materials and so on because of the advantages of fast response speed,large output force,large strain,and high positioning accuracy.Giant Magnetostrictive Actuator(GMA),which is designed based on GMM,is one of the hot research topics in this area.Although available GMA products can be found,it still have many technical problems,which need to be solved.Based on extensive literature review in this area,this research focuses on designing the GMA,which considers the structural design,magnetic field optimization,performance analysis,etc.Firstly,this article introduces the research background of smart materials.Comparing with different types of smart materials,the material properties of GMM will be presented.Then the magnetostrictive effect,the development,characteristics and application prospects of giant magnetostrictive material will be introduced in detailed.Based on the above,the main research topics and the contribution of this research will be presented.Secondly,the mainstructural components of GMA will be introduced which includes the function analysis of each component.Then the working principle and design method of GMA will be presented.Combined with the magnetic circuit structure,temperature control system,preload device and other issues that should be considered in the design of the actuator,a set of design schemes are proposed,including the selection of the GMM rod,the calculation of the excitation coil,the design of the temperature control system and the pressing device and the design diagram of the actuator is obtained.Then,the electromagnetic field finite element method is introduced,and the magnetic field simulation and optimization is performed by the finite element magnetic field simulation software.The axial magnetic field strength and magneticfield uniformity of the GMM rod are analyzed under different magnetic circuit structures,different solenoid lengths,and different end magnet diameters to determine the optimized actuator structure.An experimental platform set-up designed based on dSPACE will be conducted to test the performance of the designed actuator,and the performance of the actuator was analyzed through the experimental data to verify the feasibility of the design.It is proposed to use permanent magnet bias magnetic field structure to further optimize the actuator based on the experimental results.Analyze and compare the four permanent magnet structures,select the cylindrical permanent magnet structure with the best magnetic field performance,and study the influence of air gap,permanent magnet size and other factors on its magnetic field.Finally,it summarizes the study of the full text and looks forward to the work that needs to be carried out next.
