Phenol Reforming On Fe,Cu Modified Ni-based Catalysts To Hydrogen Production

In order to improve the activity of Ni/MgO in bio-oil steam reforming,a series of Fe-Ni/MgO and Cu-Ni/MgO catalysts were prepared using the co-impregnation method.The catalysts were characterized by XRD,N2 adsorption-desorption,H2-TPR and TEM.In a fixed-bed reactor,Steam reforming of phenol to produce hydrogen was studied on the prepared catalyst.The modification of Ni/MgO catalytic activity by the second metals,Fe and Cu,was investigated.N2 adsorption-desorption and XRD results indicated that the addition of a small amount of Fe or Cu had hardly effecte on the physical properties of the Ni/MgO catalyst,and the formation of Cu-Ni alloy was detected.The results of H2-TPR and TEM showed that the addition of Fe and Cu improved the dispersion of Ni particles.The results of XPS indicated that the addition of metallic Fe forms an interaction force between metallic Ni and metallic Fe.This interaction force can suppress the sintering of metallic Ni in adjacent positions and the oxidation of metallic Ni,which increases activity of the active component Ni on xFe-yNi/MgO.A small amount of Cu can inhibit the oxidation of Ni on the surface of the x Cu-zNi/MgO catalyst,and a small particle size Ni-Cu alloy improves the dispersibility of the metal Ni,while suppressing the sintering of Ni species and coke deposition on the active Ni.The above modification improves the activity of the Ni/MgO catalyst.Hydrogen production from steam reforming phenol showed that adding Fe and Cu can significantly enhance the activity of Ni/MgO.2Fe-60Ni/MgO and 2Cu-240Ni/MgO showed the highest activity.With same reaction conditions,the phenol conversion and H2 yield on the Ni/MgO were 56%and 43%,while 2Fe-60Ni/MgO were 83%and 65%,the phenol conversion and H2 yield were enhanced 41%and 60%,respectively.The phenol conversion and H2 yield on the 2Cu-240Ni/MgO were 82%and 62%,were enhanced 40%and 46%respectively.
