In this paper, the linen fiber was modified by the HC extracts and DNS,which has good antibacterial,mildew-proof function and significantly improved ultraviolet protection ability.Firstly, the HC extracts were selected as the functional agent for modification of linen fiber through the screening of the functions of plant extract of herbal medicine. The relevant functions of the HC extracts and HCG such as antibacterial activity,anti-mould activity and ultraviolet protection ability were comparatively assessed with the same content of HCG.The above functions of the HC extracts are obviously better than HCG in the aspect of cost performance and environmental protection. Therefore, the HC extracts were selected as the functional agent for modification of the linen fiber.Secondly, the pretreated linen fiber has the good gloss and it is soft and elastic at the same time. The advantage of low concentration alkali scouring and bleaching over just nontension concentrated alkali bleaching on the mechanical property of linen fiber was analyzed by tests.Compared with the untreated linen fiber, the linen fiber treated with low concentration alkali scouring and bleaching has lower fracture strength and higher fracture elongation, but the impurities on the surface of the pretreated linen fiber were effectively removed.Thirdly, the optimal modification method of linen fiber was using DNS and the HC extracts with impregnation and ultrasonic treatment. The concentration of DNS and the HC extracts in aqueous solution were also selected in need.In general, the required functional requirements can be achieved within the concentration range of 0.05 g/mL-0.3 g/mL,and the best concentration of DNS and the HC extracts in aqueous solution were 0.15 g/m L and 0.25 g/m L respectively. Finally, the untreated linen fiber and the modified linen fiber were characterized by SEM,FTIR,XRD analysis and the relevant functions such as antibacterial activity, antimould activity and ultraviolet protection ability as well as durability of functionalities were also comparatively assessed. The HC extracts were covered on the surface of the modified linen fiber which was closely bound to the plant extracts with unchanged structure.Although the average fineness and the fracture strength of the modified linen fiber were decreased slightly, the fracture elongation and the moisture regain were increased slightly. The bacteriostatic rates of the modified linen fiber as well as the after 20 times washing fiber were 99.85% and 84.12% for S.aureus, and 98.65% and 82.08% for E.coli,respectively.Moreover,the anti-mould grade of the modified linen fiber was 0,and it was 2 after 20 times washing. The UPF values of the modified linen fiber as well as the after 20 times washing fiber were 42.14 and 27.63.The antibacterial activity and the anti-mould activity of the modified linen fiber were good and ultraviolet protection ability of the modified linen fiber were still improved after 20 times of washing.
