Construction Material Waste Minimization And Management On Private Commercial Building Project Sites In Addis Ababa,Ethiopia

The construction industry is one of the most used examples of project-based industries.Therefore,this thesis work was an attempt to assess the current situation of construction material waste management and minimization of selected private commercial building project sites in Addis Ababa.The main methodology of the thesis work is formulated as follows;Introduction with the objective of the study has stated,a literature review was carried out from relevant articles,publications and research works to identify the current situation regarding the major construction material waste causes,and minimizing and managing measures practiced in the construction industry on all stakeholder?s contractors,consultants,and client?s perspectives.In addition,questionnaires survey was conducted to identify the major causes of the material waste,level of the measures to waste minimization.The analysis for responses of respondents has been carried out through statistical analysis using Excel and Minitab?s.The finding of this research work from the analysis indicates that the major waste source for the generation of the waste,as well as the level of contribution for the generation of waste from the three stakeholders(contractors,consultants,and clients)shows difference in terms of relative importance index(RII)result.The total relative importance index result ranked from the first to fifth from contractors,consultants and client?s response for the level of contribution of waste sources to the generation of concrete,steel reinforcement,timber,and blocks waste on selected commercial building construction projects are analyzed and identified.The case study has been carried on selected three private commercial building projects and the effects of waste on the total project cost have been done.Basically,the study focused on four basic materials in terms of their influence on the total project costs which are concrete,steel reinforcement,timber,and blocks.The result showed that the average cost of waste incurred in all the three case study sites is 5% of the total project cost.The highest percentage of waste and cost has been seen on concrete works highly on cement.Finally,based on the findings of the thesis work possible recommendations and future work indications for further study on the construction material management and minimization on private commercial construction projects has been given.
