Rapid urbanization brings new opportunities for city’s development and prosperity. However, the urban land expansion makes the arable land decrease sharply and the land resource is becoming more scarce day by day.Under this condition, the urban land expanding to hilly terrain is increasingly becoming a trend which makes the study of hilly city’s land expansion significant and practical. This thesis carries out a systematic study about hilly city’s expansion with the way of three-step analysis thinking, from background analysis, theoretical analysis to empirical analysis, which adopts the combination of documents collection with field research, qualitative analysis with quantitative analysis and deductive research with empirical study. This thesis is divided into six chapters:The first chapter elaborates the background, purpose and significance of the study, sums up the development at home and abroad, and puts forward to systemic method and framework of this study at the same time. The second chapter, started with discrimination of relevant theories, summarizes the inner mechanism of urban land expansion by analyzing and studying the Threshold Analysis, the Growth Pole Theory and the Unbalanced Development Law,dissects the development of urban land expansion through the detailed interpretation of the theoretical model and relevant cases in foreign countries and puts forward the requirements of China’s urban land expansion. The third chapter discusses the main influencing factors first, then summarizes the phase characters, scale characters and morphological properties of hilly city’s expansion on the basis of summarizing and analyzing the topography characteristics of hilly city, which lays a foundation for summarizing the main models of hilly city’s land expansion below. The fourth and fifth chapter are the core of the whole thesis.Chapter 4 presents three dominant models of hilly city’s expansion, these are the centripetal mode with compact circle, the centrifugal mode with extended axial band and the blending point-axis mode.It also discusses the expansion law,the differences with plain cities and the inspiration for urban planning of these three modes respectively and conducts a comprehensive analysis.Chapter 5 is an instance analysis.Taking Changsha, the typical hilly city,as an example, this chapter analyzes Changsha’s history and main mode of land expansion, does a quantitative measurement about its land expansion since 1989 and puts forward some control methods in the end.The last part is the conclusion. This part not only summarizes the main findings, innovations and deficiency of this thesis, but also presents some problems which need to be further studied in the future.
