The detection and testing of exhaust screw calipers is crucial for the braking performance of vehicles. The detection and testing of geometric parameters and surface defects of thread based on machine vision can not only reduce the labor intensity and cost, but also improve the accuracy and stability. The main research content of this paper is shown in the following aspects:(1)This paper introduced the significance of detection and testing of thread,as well as the problems existing in the traditional mode, then it introduced the development status of machine vision technology and the prospected for the application and development of machine vision technology in detection and testing of thread. At the same time,it made brief introduction of the research and development status at home and abroad.(2)The technical indicators for the detection system was made and the detection system of exhaust screw calipers based on machine vision was designed according to the features of geometric structure and surface defects of exhaust screw calipers. After measured the geometric parameters of the thread, the paper classified the defects categories.(3)Finally,the major diameter, pitch diameter, minor diameter, thread pitch and thread angle were obtained. And all the parameters were reached specification.defects on the thread surface can be effectively judged.(4)According to the requirements, the software system was designed;the experimental results were summarized from two aspects of the geometric parameters and the surface defects;then the errors that may be involved in the system were listed.
