Steel slag,as a derivative of steel making process,has increasingly become the metallurgical industry's second largest waste,especially with the growing number of China's Steel-ouput,which has been ranking top of the worldwide.Effective treatment and utilization of steel slag becomes more and more important for the sustainable development of steel industry and our countrie's economy because it will cause lots of problems if we ignore it,such as large scale dumping,occupation of farmland,waste of resource and pollution.This paper,is based on Guangxi Traffic Science and Technology project "Steel Slag Application Technology Research for Coastal Highway Subgrade Treatment",which mainly organized,implemented and managed by Guangxi Transportation Research Institute.Changsha University of Science and Technology contributes themselves to the investigate and survey,laboratory study,on-site experiment implementation,General Research Report and related guide compiling of this project.Integrated with the Geological characteristics and steel industiry features of Hunan Province,as well as the experimental condition of our school,this paper focuses on the laboratory experiments on improvement of subgrade soil mixing with steel slag,analysis of the feasibility of steel slag clay mixture as the roadbed as well as its physical and mechanical properties,the main research contents are as follows:(1)Test of basic physical properties of converter slag and clay.Through the laboratory tests of steel slag,the basic physical and chemical properties of steel slag were obtained,and the conventional treatment process of steel slag was obtained by consulting the data.(2)Subgrade CBR test.Compacting different ratio of steel slag clay specimen,it records different CBR values,as well as the relationship between the degree of compaction and CBR in various proportions,so to locate the regular patterns that how does the steel slag content influence the partial resistance load capacity of the specimen by analysing.(3)Resilient Pattern Sampling.By compacting different ratio of steel slag and clay mixture to obtain samples that varies in compactness so as to avail resilient pattern experiments,which reveal the relationship between resilient modulus and compactness.Thus the improvements of compressive properties on different mixturing ratio of steel slag in the clay could be analysed.(4)Three axis shear test.Three axle shear tests applied on samples of different proportioning under saturated and unsaturated conditions to discover how does the ratio influence the shearing strength as well as how does saturated condition and unsaturated condition influence the shearing strength,cohesion and internal friction angle.(5)Analysis of steel slag application in subgrade filling projects according to the laboratory test data recorded and studied.This is aim to further evaluate the feasibility of steel slag as a solution to some specific problems in subgrade filling projects and/or benefits in economy or environment.
