In urban green land,it is garden paths that link various elements of a landscape and constitute an important part of the overall environment. The design of garden roads affects directly the rationality of every function division in urban green space, therefore playing a paramount and decisive role in the integrated planning of landscape design. However,it is a common scene in unban green land that people avoid the garden roads planned and designed by designers.Instead, they walk willfully to create their own “desire path”,which not only undermines the original design but also significantly enhances the difficulty in protecting surrounding vegetation.Meanwhile, potential dangers are posed to the safety of public roads.Predecessors did make quite a lot of researches in regards to garden road design.Yet when it comes to “desire path”,relevant studies can be fairly limited.Worse still, most of these limited studies are empirical summarized researches rather than quantitative researches with the public as the main users. After field research on 160 “desire paths” in different types of urban green land, this paper generalizes, analyzes and summarizes the basic characteristics of “desire path”.And with the control variables and quantitative methods, the characteristics of“desire path” are quantified. Then this paper collects the public group and the student group to make their selection preferences assessment in “desire path”.The SPSS 22.0one-way analysis of variance is employed to analyze the difference and overall distribution of the two scales. And the correlation analysis and the linear regression analysis are also utilized to figure out the quantitative relation between the public's preferences to “desire path” and the characteristics of “desire path”.After that, the influencing factors of the public's preferences to “desire path” are obtained.Consequently, this paper provides a scientific reference for the design and maintenance of garden roads in urban green space.Major conclusions of this research are as follows:(1)no significant difference exists between the public and student groups in their preferences to “desire path”,and the two sets of evaluation criterion are consistent;(2)people have different preferences in choosing a path when the characteristics of “desire paths” are different;and(3)the width of view and hydrophilicity play a part in determining the public's choice of pavement. In the end, according to the research conclusions, this paper puts forward several suggestions for garden road design in urban green land,so that thehumanized design and later maintenance of garden roads may be guided. The main suggestions include:(1)the optimization of garden road design in different types of urban green space;and(2)the optimization of garden road management in urban green land.
