Commercial vehicles are mainly vehicles carrying goods or people, most of which are powered by diesel engines, because diesel engines can output greater torque, and thus vehicles can achieve greater load-bearing quality and better climbing performance of the design objectives. At the same time, large torque output will also increase the heat generated by the diesel engine, the need for cooling system and timely heat away.If the vehicle cooling system is not matched properly, the high temperature of torque point will occur, which will lead to the reduction of output power and even the engine failure. In order to improve the success rate of the cooling system development, shorten the development cycle and reduce the development cost,a new development method of the cooling system for light and medium commercial vehicles is determined by referring to the domestic and foreign related literature. The main contents of this study include the following aspects:The function of vehicle cooling system is introduced. The main components and working principle of the cooling system are studied. The design idea of the intercooler and its inlet and outlet pipes together with the cooling system is put forward. The design specification of vehicle cooling system is established. The research object and scope, compilation purpose and corresponding reference standard of the design specification are defined. The design requirements of vehicle cooling system are analyzed. The design process of vehicle cooling system is determined. The matters needing attention in the layout of vehicle cooling system are summarized for the follow-up vehicle. The design and calculation of cooling system and the layout of the scheme have laid the theoretical foundation and guiding method.By using the design input parameters such as vehicle design objectives and boundary requirements, the cooling system of the whole vehicle is selected and checked, and the structural parameters determined and the data obtained from surveying and mapping benchmarking are analyzed to determine the design scheme of the cooling system.By using the finite element analysis software STAR-CCM+,the CFD simulation analysis of the cooling system is carried out according to the given boundary conditions and different simulation conditions. The distribution of the flow field and temperature field of the cooling system is obtained, and the matching scheme of the system completed by the traditional design method of the cooling system is checked.Existing abnormalities in the cooling system, and then targeted optimization of the design scheme,re-analysis and determine the optimal cooling system design scheme.By making parts and assembling them into the whole vehicle prototype, the corresponding test is carried out to confirm that the cooling capacity of the cooling system can meet the engine matching requirements under normal operating conditions. The research of this subject has changed the traditional method which used analogy method to design the cooling system of the whole vehicle according to the experience before, and then to modify the design scheme after the prototype is manufactured. The application of simulation analysis technology speeds up the development of new model, reduces the test workload and saves the test cost.At the same time, the development cost is reduced, the product design cycle is shortened, and the success rate of new vehicle development is improved.
