Recent years have seen a global significant growth in the installed capacity of renewable energy generations. However, due to the configuration of distribution networks, the hosting capacity for supporting renewable energies is insufficient. And to keep the network operating safely, the operators often abandon the wind energy and solar energy, which is undesirable from the viewpoint of effective use of renewable energy.Under this background, the multi-period network reconfiguration method is researched to increase the hosting capacity for supporting renewable energy in this paper. The main contributions include:(1)A problem formulation of multi-period network reconfiguration for increasing the host capacity to a desired level with a minimal switching operation number for a 24-hour period is presented(2)A novel four-stage solution methodology is developed to solve the proposed problem formulation, including the assessment stage,time-partitioning stage, optimization stage and evaluation stage.(3)Continuation Distribution Power Flow method is used to compute the hourly hosting capacity, which can overcome the non-convergence of the conventional power flow solver near the bifurcation point.(4)The time-partitioning stage is developed to facilitate the design of a minimal number of switch operations.which is composed global partitioning stage based on fuzzy C-means algorithm and local problem-dependent period adjustment.(5)The Hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm based on loop search scheme is developed to avoid the curse of dimensionality and infeasible solutions which violates the radial network constraint.(6)The scenario set is used to deal with the variability of DG output. And the IEEE123-Bus case and a 1001-node system are used to evaluate the proposed method with promising results in comparison with other two simplified methodology.
