With the further development of economic globalization, the energy consumption is in accelerating growth. The solar energy is widely used as a clean and sustainable resource. However, the solar photovoltaic power generation system is installed in an open and unobstructed outdoor environment, and the sedimentation of wind-sand in the atmosphere to the surface of the solar cells will reduce its output performance. The uneven distribution of dust for a long time will cause the hot spot effect and reduce the service life of the solar cells. In this paper, the effect of sand sedimentation on solar cells is studied from two aspects:experimental research and numerical simulation. The details are as follows:(1)A solar cell outdoor testing system was built according to the principle of solar cells testing. The I-U curve of three types of solar cells was measured by changing the installation inclination angle, and it was found that the optimum installation inclination angle obtained by the experiment was consistent with the value in the theoretical calculation.(2)By controlling the dust density of surface area of the solar cells, the I-U curves of three types of solar cells were measured.Further calculations show that the performance parameters of the three types of solar cells vary with the density of the surface dust. The influence of monocrystalline silicon cells is the smallest, and amorphous silicon cells has the greatest impact. From the output curve of volt-ampere characteristics,it is known that when the dust density of surface is about5g/m~2,the influence about output performance of the three types of solar cells is most significant. Therefore,it is recommended to clean in time to ensure the performance of solar cells.(3)Based on Fluent software, the solar cells were simulated in the clean wind field and the dust particle phase respectively. From the simulation results, the area where the solar hot spot effect is easy to occur is obtained. When processing the solar cells,it is recommended to use the hydrophobic nano-coating to reduce the sedimentation of the sand on the surface of the solar cells.
