Statistic data shows that electrical fire is on the top list of fire for many years, both for the cause reason and direct economy cost. And arc fault is one of the leading reasons for electrical fire. With the diversification and the application popularization of electrical equipments, building electrical wiring is becoming more complex. Therefore, effective arc fault detection as a result of insulation defect within the electrical wiring is of great significance. When the arc fault occurs, besides changes of current and voltage, the arc discharge process will produce electromagnetic signals,as well as high frequency transient current.Based on these phenomena,an arc fault detection method based on electromagnetic signals is proposed in this paper.Firstly,a research on discharge mechanism and process is studied from micro perspective.A point discharge simulation model is built based on particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision method.Through the dischargeprocess simulation, the motion characteristics of charged particles and the pulse discharge current are studied,so does mechanism of induced electromagnetic signals.Based on ultra high frequency(UHF)detection method of partial discharge,an arc fault detection based on electromagnetic signals is proposed in this paper.UHF antenna and high frequency current transformer are comprehensively utilized in the arc fault detection with various kind of load, which verifies the method feasibility. For location of arc fault source,a TDOA location algorithm is studied. Moreover, the time-delay estimation error are analyzed by the theory and simulation test. Finally, comparing several time-delay estimation algorithm,an arc fault location algorithm is optimized which also validates the possibility of optimization.
