One notable feature of dynamic positioning system is that the floating structure is equipped with a variety of propellers. Each propeller play its respective role in the dynamic positioning system. In the DP system equipped with different kinds of thrusters, the main thruster could provide force to resist the effects of environment for its high power and propulsion efficiency.Besides, the main thruster is far from the center of gravity of the floating structure, which could produce large moments to control the heading of floating structures. But at the same time, the rudder has high susceptibility which needs high accuracy when it confronted with thrust allocation. So usage of main thruster and its roles in dynamic positioning system is needed to studied, which is the main content of this paper. In this paper, two methods are used to learn the role of the main propeller in the dynamic positioning system from three aspects: the impact of other propellers, the influence on the positioning accuracy of the system and the influence on the power consumption of the system. The two methods are numerical simulation and model test.Firstly, the dynamic positioning system is introduced in detail, including relevant theory and research progress.Secondly, the time-domain simulation is introduced and a brief thrust allocation including main thruster and rudder is raised. Therefore,a time domain simulation program is built on the Simulink platform to study the dynamic positioning system. On this basis, the model experiment is carried out to explore the dynamic positioning under different working conditions by setting different working states of the propeller. At last, the role of the main propeller in the dynamic positioning system is analyzed by numerical simulation and model test.
