Preliminary Study On Modern Shophouse Architecture In Penang,Malaysia

Modern shophouse as widely distributed in south-east Asia,southern fujian,guangdong and other places in China,the types of buildings has been got the attention of overseas scholars,and has the quite rich research results,domestic scholars in recent years our country coastal shophouse building also carried out a large number of research,but for overseas,especially lack of awareness of the overhang of Malaysia.This thesis to penang Malaysia as an object,the overhang deeds through on-the-spot investigation,surveying and mapping,and analysis and other methods to systematically research,development and construction of penang characteristics,clear to the role of the construction of the overhang,Chinese immigrants in penang for traceability of shophouse building in our country and basic research materials for the development of protection.Penang’s shophouse building is a key link in its urban development.As an urban construction model,it spreads to other areas and is one of the representatives of the integration of Chinese and western architectural cultures.Based on the development context of penang city,the author discusses the construction of modern shophouse building in different periods,investigates and analyzes its historical evolution,construction mode,block layout,plane function,section structure and style characteristics,makes a brief comparison with minnan shophouse building in layout,and summarizes the important characteristics of penang shophouse building.After a lot of research and analysis,I preliminarily concluded that the building codes and land management codes of the straits colony in the early 19 th century were the key reasons for the formation of the current shophouse street area in penang.The shophouse building construction in southern fujian in China did not fully adopt the same construction mode as that in penang,and the core purpose was to transform the traditional streets.In addition,the development of penang shophouse buildings is closely related to the expansion of Chinese immigrant settlements and the architectural and cultural trends in Europe,and there are various planar patterns such as commercial and residential shophouse buildings,residential shophouse buildingsand other types of shophouse buildings.According to the mainstream style and aesthetic taste in different periods,the facade style distinguishes five shophouse styles: early brick style,south China eclectic style,hai xia eclectic style,art deco style and early modern style.Penang shophouse building in Malaysia is the main living space of Chinese immigrants,so its development context and characteristics are of great significance to the research on the protection of modern shophouse.
