The main problems caused by the ship waves in shallow water are affecting the berthing condition of the ships, damaging the channel and revetment engineering and affecting the living environment of the natural animal and plants in the channel. Therefore, the research of ship waves has become the hot research contents of the port engineering and ship engineering. Two methods are used to study the issues caused by the ship waves in Nansha port, including the local observation and the numerical stimulation.Based on the free-running terminal facilities among Guangdong,Hong Kong and Macao yachts,a ship waves observation station was established near Nansha Passenger Station, and the factors of wave produced by high-speed catamaran were recorded by the pressure tester and tide gauge. The mathematical model of ship waves takes the shallow water equation as the governing equation, and the wave height is applied at the ship-traveling points to stimulate the waves generated by the movement of ship. The wave height variation of each point in the water area is solved by the finite element method and the difference method. The results calculated by the mathematical model were verified by the observed data of ship traveling waves and reached a good agreement, which means the model can be used in practical engineering calculation.Based on the validated shallow-water ship wave mathematical model, the effects of ship speed and channel depth on the water level of engineering area during the entry of high-speed catamaran are simulated and analyzed respectively. It is considered that channel depth has a certain influence on the maximum wave height and duration of engineering area but not much, while the ship speed is still the main influencing factor. The analysis of wave characteristics caused by the high-speed catamaran at Nansha Passenger Station could provide the designing basis for the construction and use of the free-running berths for yachts among Guangdong,Hong Kong and Macao. The mathematical model of shallow-water ship waves can provide reference for the numerical simulation of high-speed catamaran waves in inland waterway.
