Due to an increasing emission of anthropogenic green house gas,the reduction of vehicle energy consumption is gaining increasing importance for automobile companies.Energy efficiency of vehicles thus gains crucial importance as it directly affects emissions. To reduce vehicle energy consumption,a driving strategy is derived in this work when passing a traffic light. The derivation is based on common driving behavior to ensure the acceptance of the driver. However,an optimal driving strategy is calculated by solving an optimization problem.Hereby, the suggested driving strategy can be compared to the common driver behavior and the optimal one.To get concrete data of the fuel consumption and to make it comparable to each other,a simulation is performed. This study reveals that improvement in fuel consumption can achieved by just a little adaption of common driving behavior. The resulting speed profile can be seen as an instructive template for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems or Adaptive Cruise Control systems.
