Using the fractal theory and statistical method,taking the root system of the 3a seabuckthorn planted in the Pisha sandstone area of Inner Mongolia as the research object,the root fractal dimension and fractal abundance,root length,root quantity,root weight,root-shoot ratio,etc.of the seabuckthorn were studied in order to reveal the root architecture characteristics of the seabuckthorn and the adaptability of the root system to different habitats and provide the scientific basis for selection and optimization of the seabuckthorn forests.The main results were summarized as follows:(1)The root system of the seabuckthorn in the Pisha sandstone area has a fractal object characteristics and shows the obvious relationship between the fractal parameters and the growth status.The seabuckthorn is also incessantly strengthening the possession of underground space while increasing the root branch.(2)The seabuckthorn root system in the Pisha sandstone area mainly distributed in the top soil layer and the lateral roots are rather developed.The root length,root quantity,root weight,nodules mostly distributed in the 0-30 cm soil depth.The root weight mainly distributed in the root diameter more than 5mm,the root length and root quantity mainly distributed in the root diameter less than 3mm.The seabuckthorn fine root length and root quantity in the Pisha sandstone area,especially the absorbing root,amounted to the most part.The seabuckthorn has a strong adaptability to arid environment.(3)The root-shoot ratio of the seabuckthorn decreased with increasing soil moisture.It increased first and then decreased with increasing slop and slope position.The high root-shoot ratio and developed root system of the seabuckthorn in arid and barren midslope made the seabuckthorn in the Pisha sandstone area have very high value of development and utilization.The seabuckthorn grows well especially on the side slope protection works with the favorable foreground.(4)The fractal dimension,fractal abundance,root length,root quantity and root weight of the seabuckthorn were the most significant affected by soil moisture,followed by slope.Slope position had the least effect on the root architecture.(5)8% is the turning soil moisture for the seabuckthorn root system in the Pisha sandstone area.8% soil moisture is most suitable for the growth of the seabuckthorn root system.30 °-35 ° is the turning slope for the seabuckthorn root system in the Pisha sandstone area,and 60 ° is the slope threshold for the root system growth of the seabuckthorn.The slope bottom or midslope is suitable for the growth of the seabuckthorn root system,and the slope top is not suitable for the growth of the seabuckthorn root system.The seabuckthorn in the Pisha sandstone area is suitable for planting on the slope bottom or midslope with the soil moisture of about 8%.The midslope with a slope of 30°-35° is recommended.
