In this study,six garden plant seedlings(Syzygium tephrodes,Arenga tremula,Loropetalum chinense,Rhapis excels,Artabotrys hexapetalus and Osmanthus fragrans)in South China were studied.Ceramic pots,plastic pots,non-woven bags and root-control containers were selected as the nursery containers for their growth characteristics(ground diameter,height,crown width,and under branch height)and physiological characteristics(photosynthetic characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters)were investigated to determine the effects of different nursery containers on seedling growth,light energy utilization and dissipation capacity.It can provide scientific theoretical basis for container seedling cultivation techniques in South China and serve the standardization and large-scale development of nursery seedlings for garden plants.(1)The height,ground diameter and crown width of S.tephrodes,A.tremula,L.chinense planted in non-woven bags were higher than the data in plastic pots,while the under branch height of those seedlings planted in plastic pots was higher than that in non-woven bags.For R.excelsa seedlings,the diameter and crown width of seedlings planted in plastic pots were larger than the data in ceramic pots,whereas the plant height,under branch height and height-to-diameter ratio in ceramic pots were higher than the data in plastic pots.The height,ground diameter and crown width of A.hexapetalus planted in the root-control containers were significantly higher than those in plastic pots,while the under branch height and the ratio of height to diameter of the A.hexapetalus planted in plastic pots were higher.For O.fragrans seedlings,the order of different containers on plant height and ground diameter from big to small was as follows:root-control containers>non-woven bags>plastic pots.The results of O.fragrans seedlings in root-control containers on the crown width and under branch height were better than others in plastic pots and non-woven bags.(2)The SPAD value,net photosynthetic rate(P_n)and stomatal conductance(G_s)of S.tephrodes,A.tremula and L.chinense that planted in non-woven bags were higher than those planted in plastic pots.The intercellular carbon dioxide concentration(C_i)and transpiration rate(T_r)of S.tephrodes and WUE of A.tremula that planted in non-woven bags were higher than those planted in plastic pots.But the C_i,T_r and stomatal limitation(L_s)of A.tremula and L.chinense as well as the WUE of S.tephrodes and L.chinense planted in plastic pots was higher than that in non-woven bags.For R.excelsa seedlings,the P_n,G_s,T_r and L_s of seedlings planted in plastic pots were higher than that in ceramic pots,and the SPAD value,P_n and G_s in ceramic pots were higher than that in plastic pots.The SPAD value,C_i and WUE of A.hexapetalus planted in the root-control containers was higher than that in plastic pots,whereas the P_n,G_s,T_r and L_s of seedlings in plastic pots were higher.For O.fragrans seedlings,the SPAD value,P_n,G_s and C_i of seedlings root-control containers were higher than others in non-woven bags and plastic pots.,while the T_r of seedlings in root-control containers were better than others in plastic pots and non-woven bags.(3)The maximum fluorescence yield(F_m),the maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII(F_v/F_m),excitation capture efficiency of PSII(F_v?/F_m?)and non-photochemical quenching(NPQ)of S.tephrodes,A.tremula and L.chinense seedlings planted in non-woven bags were higher than those planted in plastic pots,as well as the fluorescence yield(F_o)of S.tephrodes and A.tremula,photochemical quantum yield of PSII in the light(Y(II))of S.tephrodes and L.chinense in non-woven bags.However,the F_o and F_m?of L.chinense and Y(II)of A.tremula planted in plastic pots was higher than that in non-woven bags.For R.excelsa seedlings,the F_o,F_m,F_m?,F_v/F_m,NPQ,F_v?/F_m?and Y(II)of seedlings planted in plastic pots were higher than that in ceramic pots.The F_o,F_m,NPQ and F_v?/F_m?of A.hexapetalus planted in the root-control containers were higher than that in plastic pots,whereas the F_m?,F_v/F_m and Y(II)of the A.hexapetalus in plastic pots were lower.For O.fragrans seedlings,the order of different containers on the F_o and NPQ of seedlings from big to small were as follows:non-woven bags>root-control containers>plastic pots.The order of different containers on the F_m and F_v?/F_m?of plant from big to small was as follows:root-control containers>non-woven bags>plastic pots.The order of different containers on Y(II)of the plant from big to small was:plastic pot>root-control containers>non-woven bags.(4)In conclusion,according to the data on the growth performance parameters,photosynthetic and fluorescent properties,the root-control containers and non-woven bags have better effects than those in plastic pots and ceramic pots.
