Bamboo stump is a important part of woody debris in bamboo forest ecosystem. The decomposition and transformation of bamboo stump are great significance to the nutrient cycling of ecosystem and productivity of bamboo stands. So far, there have been only limited numbers of studies on the characteristics of decomposition process and nutrient release of bamboo stumps. The degrees of bamboo stump from the process of decomposition were divided. And the characteristics of nutrient release of bamboo stump from the process of decomposition were studied. The effects of treatment by mechanical and degrading bacteria on decomposition of bamboo stump were also studied in this paper.Research shows that the average density,acid-insoluble lignin and organic carbon content of bamboo stump in 1 to 5 year old bamboo plants showed a trend of gradual increase with the increase of bamboo age.Compared with the bamboo stump in living bamboo plants, the density and material hardness of bamboo stump with biological activity had no significant change after 4 years when the bamboo plants were cut down. And the density and material hardness of bamboo stump that had lost its physiological activity had decreased after 4 years when the bamboo plants were cut down. With the increase of decomposition grade of bamboo stump, the content of cellulose and hemicelluloses in bamboo stumps decreased, and the content of lignin in bamboo stumps increased gradually. With the increase of decomposition grade of bamboo stump, the content of organic carbon in bamboo stumps decreased, and the content of N and K in bamboo stumps decreased first and then increased.Only 22%quantity of bamboo stumps had lost their physiological activities that were treated by mechanical and degrading bacteria within 4 years. However, the number of microorganisms and the activity of celluloses of bamboo stumps that were treated by mechanical and degrading bacteria were increase. The changing trend of the material quality of bamboo stumps was consistent with that of the bamboo culms on the ground, which indicated that the material quality of bamboo stumps and the bamboo culms grew and changed synchronously. The density and material hardness of bamboo stumps with biological activity had no significant change after 4 years when plants were cut down, which indicated that the bamboo stumps can prevent microorganisms from eroding, thereby affecting the decomposing of bamboo stumps.Cellulose and hemicelluloses are more easily decomposed by microorganisms in the process of decay, while lignin is decomposed relatively slowly.Measures for mechanical treatment and microbial addition had no significant effect on the decomposition of bamboo stumps. We believe that solving the problem that promoting the decomposing of bamboo stumps should reduce the physiological activity of bamboo stumps firstly. It should be used with those techniques that cutting the nutrient-supplying or water-supplying ways.
