The Yangtze River basin with sufficient heat and abundant precipitation is one of the main producing areas of paddy rice in China. However, under the control of subtropical anticyclone, the region will often suffer from a continuous high temperature weather after Meiyu period. When the temperature rises to a certain extent, the growth of paddy rice will be adversely affected, resulting in blocked rice growth, yield decrease, poor quality and even plants or an organ broken, which is high temperature heat damage.Studies have shown that paddy rice high temperature damage has become one of the major agro-meteorological disasters along the Yangtze River. At present, remote sensing technology has been widely applied to agriculture. However, there are not many studies on the mapping of paddy rice high temperature damage and the estimation of the area affected based on remote sensing technology. To this end, this paper carried out a research on high temperature damage monitoring of paddy rice based on remote sensing technology.Accurate estimation of fully covered daily average temperature, daily maximum temperature, identifying paddy rice planting area and paddy rice flowering and heading stage are the key technologies for high temperature damage monitoring of paddy rice. This paper selects six rice high-yield province along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province,Anhui Province,Hubei Province,Hunan Province,Jiangxi Province and Sichuan Province as research areas. This paper firstly used MODIS land surface temperature, vegetation index dataset,DEM dataset and air temperature dataset measured at meteorological station to estimate the full covered daily average temperature and daily maximum temperature in the study area;then we used MODIS reflectivity dataset and vegetation index data and DEM datasets to identify the paddy rice planting area and its flowering and heading periods. Then,we combined with the high temperature damage temperature index of paddy rice, the damage happening extent of high temperature damage in paddy rice was monitored, and the affected area and the disaster level were estimated too;the research results over the years were finally verified and analyzed by research data and meteorological data. This paper realized the estimation of the paddy rice planting area affected by high temperature damage, the assessment of the disaster level, and the spatial distribution map production of the damaged area and disaster level in the study area from 2003 to 2016,and this paper also described the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of high temperature damage of paddy rice in the study area.Among them, the high temperature damage of paddy rice in the study area in 2013 hits the most.Nearly 33.51%of the paddy rice fields suffered from high temperature damage.Hubei Province and Anhui Province had the highest proportion of disasters, reaching 43.02%and 66.35%of their paddy rice planting area, respectively.Secondly,in 2006,17.57%of the paddy rice fields were affected of the study.Among them,Sichuan Province has the most extensive damaged area, and the damaged area reaches 32.59%of the paddy rice planting area of Sichuan province.
