This experiment was to investigate the effects of aminolevulinic acid(ALA)on the production performance, serum biochemical and antioxidant indexes, organ iron content and iron metabolism-related factor expression in sows and piglets,to reveal the mechanism of ALA and to provide theoretical basis for its application in animal production.Thirty-two "Landrace × Yorkshire"(3 to 4 parities)were used from d85 of gestation to d21 of lactation. The treatments were arranged as a complete randomized design, and sows were randomly divided into 4 treatments(8 sows/treatment): control group(basal diet),three experimental groups(the basal diet supplemented with 25mg/kg ALA,25mg/kg ALA+110mg/kg Fe-Gly,and 50 mg/kg ALA,respectively).During the lactation stage, all the treatment groups were fed with basic diet. Two litters of piglets were randomly selected from ALA-treated sows without iron supplementation. The results showed as follows:compared with the control group, the addition of ALA in the diet of pregnant sows significantly increased the body weight, daily gain and organ index(intestinal tract, liver, and spleen)of suckling piglets(P < 0.05),and serum ferritin, serum iron content, immunoglobulin G content, oxidation resistance of sows and piglets, and iron content and Fn mRNA expression in the placenta of sows and liver of piglets, and decreased total iron binding capacity of sows and piglets,mRNA expression of TfR1 and TfR2 in the placenta and liver, and DMT,Fpn1,and Dcytb in duodenum(P < 0.05).The weight(d7?14?21)and average daily gain of piglets were enhanced for sows fed the25 mg/kg ALA or 25 mg/kg ALA+ Fe-Gly compared with the 50 mg/kg ALA.The single use of 25 mg/kg ALA significantly improved iron content and increased iron metabolism in placenta, colostrum and regular milk of sows compared with the combined effects of 25mg/kg ALA and Fe-Gly(P < 0.05).Under this experimental condition, from 30 days before the pregnancy sow feedcontinuous separate add 25 mg/kg ALA or mix add 25 mg/kg ALA and glycine iron in the diet, not complement iron agent after birth, piglets can also get the same as the muscles injected dextran iron weight effect,at the same time the piglet SI and FE content were increased significantly,TIBC significantly reduced(P < 0.05).In summary,ALA in sows diet can improve production performance of piglets, improve the serum biochemical, antioxidant, immune indexes, and organ iron storage of sows and piglets,as well as the mRNA expression levels of iron metabolics-related factors in the liver, duodenum, and placenta. The best results were achieved at 25 mg/kg ALA,followed by 25mg/kg ALA Fe-Gly.
