As an important economic crop in China, cotton plays a major role in the textile industry. For the past few years, the economic benefit of planting cotton decreased because of the rapid increasing labor cost and the restriction of low level mechanized production. The situation of cotton production is getting more and more serious.Light and simplified cultivation can reduce labor cost and raise efficiency, which is an important way to realize stable high yield andimprove fiber quality and production efficiencyof cotton. Therefore,it has great practical significance to study the effect of light and simplified cultivation technology on cotton fiber and seed quality. In this study, the effects of two pruning patterns including conventional pruning?removing vegetative branches and topping?and simplified pruning?retaining vegetative branches and topping?on cotton seed yield and its components, fruit branch bolls, vegetative branch bolls, fiber and seed quality characters were studied in different cotton genotypes. The main results were as follows:1.Conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments had no significant effects on boll weight, seed index and lint percentage of different cotton varieties, and there was no interaction effect between the two treatments and the three cotton varieties. The boll weight and seed index of fruit branch were significantly higher than that of leaf branch, and the difference was very significant, but the lint percentage of fruit branch and leaf branch was not significant. In the two treatments, there was no interaction effect between the three varieties and different boll setting positions?fruit branch boll, leaf branch boll?on yield components?boll weight, seed finger, lint percentage?.In a word, conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments had no significant effect on seed cotton yield, which could save labor cost and improve cotton planting efficiency.2.Compared with the treatment of retaining leafy branches, the effect of conventional pruning on fiber specific strength of different types of cotton reached a significant level?F=7.27?,and conventional pruning could improve the fiber specific strength.Conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments had significant effects on micronaire value, which could be reduced by conventional pruning. The two treatments had no significant effect on fiber length, uniformity index and elongation, and had little effect on elongation(F=4.16×10-15).There was no interaction between the two treatments and the three varieties. The results showed that there was a significant difference?F=34.13?between the two treatments?F=34.13?.In conclusion, conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments had little effect on fiber length, evenness index and elongation, but had greater effects on fiber specific strength and micronaire value.Conventional pruning could improve fiber specific strength and decrease micronaire value, which could improve cotton flower fiber quality with conventional pruning.3.Conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments had little effect on physical quality traits of cotton seed, such as kernel index, shell index, seed kernel percentage and kernel shell ratio. There was no interaction effect between the two treatments and the three varieties. The results showed that the kernel index and shell index of fruit branch boll and leaf branch boll were significantly different, the kernel index and shell index of fruit branch and boll were significantly higher than that of leaf branch, and there was no significant difference in seed kernel rate and kernel shell ratio;under the two treatments, boll setting position and variety type had interaction effect on kernel index, seed kernel rate and kernel shell ratio, but no interaction effect on shell index. In conclusion, conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments had little effect on the physical quality of cotton seed.4.The effects of conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments on crude protein content and crude fat content of cotton seed reached a significant level.Conventional pruning could promote the accumulation of crude protein content, but reduce the accumulation of crude fat content;the two treatment methods and three varieties had no interaction effect on the crude protein content and crude fat content of cotton seeds. The results showed that there was no significant difference in crude protein content between fruit branch boll and leaf branch boll, but the difference of crude fat content was very significant. The crude fat content of fruit branch and boll was significantly higher than that of leaf branch boll;the interaction effect of boll setting position and variety type on crude protein content and crude fat content of cotton seed was observed. In conclusion, conventional pruning can promote the accumulation of crude protein content, but reduce the accumulation of crude fat content.5.Conventional pruning and foliage retaining treatments have a significant impact on the economic benefits of cotton planting. The whole growth period of conventional pruning cotton requires 345labors/hm2 of labor, and the treatment of retaining leafy branches needs150labors/hm2.The treatment of retaining leafy branches can save 195labors/hm2 and increase the benefit of cotton planting by 14600 yuan/hm2.The increase of labor cost is the main reason for the decrease of cotton planting benefit. Therefore,it can save labor and increase income. It can save production cost and improve cotton planting benefit.
