China is the largest producer and consumer of nitrogen fertilizer in the world, accounts for about 60%of the total fertilizer application in China and 30%of the annual nitrogen fertilizer application in the world.Although nitrogen fertilizer has greatly promoted the improvement of grain yield in China, the nitrogen use efficiency(NUE)is relatively low.The NUE in wheat and rice, the main grain crops in China,is only 21%-35%and 30%-35%,which is much lower than that of 40%-60%in developed countries and regions. The main ways of nitrogen loss in farmland are ammonia volatilization,nitrification-denitrification,nitrate leaching and runoff. In addition, the loss of nitrate through leaching, denitrification and other ways will have a series of adverse ecological and social impacts, such as environmental pollution. The application of nitrification inhibitor is a method which can effectively improve the NUE.It can effectively inhibit the soil nitrification process, which is the major cause of the leaching loss of NO3-,and reduce the consequent generation of N2O gas.It is widely used in developed countries, but it is rarely used in agricultural production in China. In order to study the application effect of nitrification inhibitors in the Yangtze river basin,in this study, field experiment were carried out to in vestigate the effect of application of nitrification inhibitor(NP)on the production of rice-wheat rotation system by analyzing biological characteristics of wheat and rice, the total yield of wheat and rice, and the nitrogen uptake by rice with the total nitrogen content in soil after application of nitrification inhibitor. The results showed that application of nitrification inhibitors promoted wheat biological traits and yield, and also that of rice.Taken together, nitrification inhibitors had yield potential for the wheat and rice production, the average yield of wheat increased by 2.4%,and the application of nitrification inhibitor in rice basal fertilizer could increase rice yield by 6%compared with conventional fertilization, and the average increase of rice yield is about 10%compared with conventional fertilization when applied twice.NP application can increase rice yield, duration of nitrogen fertilizer efficiency and effective utilization rate of nitrogen fertilizer.which has important significance and practical application value for future crop production and reducing agricultural non-point source pollution.
